When it comes to sources of essential rose oil, countries such as Turkey, Bulgaria, Iran and Afghanistan come to mind – but Ethiopia? As it turns out, the Ethiopian highlands, which are known for their coffee, provide the ideal conditions for growing the very fragrant Damask rose, and this "Rosa damascena" yields an exceptionally precious essential oil. Ethiopian farmer Fekade Lakew joined forces with WALA Heilmittel GmbH (Dr. Hauschka's parent company and manufacturer) and began cultivating Damask roses in keeping with the principles of biodynamic agriculture. This was the first rose oil production in sub-Saharan Africa that is transitioning to organic standards. WALA provided motivation for the project by donating the rose cuttings. After seven years' time, the plants had turned into hearty rose bushes. To make sure that the roses received the proper care from the very beginning and to create the best possible conditions, WALA provided Fekade Lakew and his employees a consultant in the field of biodynamic agriculture. The expert visits the rose farm at regular intervals several times a year to train and advise employees there about how to cultivate roses properly. As a means of ensuring compliance with the high standards WALA fundamentally upholds for the raw materials it processes, the first certification audit was held this year in keeping with Demeter guidelines and the fair-trade standard “fair for life.” WALA financed the costs of the audit. The objective of every WALA raw-material project is to expand sustainable agriculture across the globe. Partners are supported on site with funding and technical expertise. WALA signs a contract to purchase the raw materials yielded by the project. This gives the project partners security in planning, and their employees can be paid their wages on a regular basis. In its supplier relations, WALA pays special attention to decent working conditions, fair wages, and conscientious and responsible use of environmental resources. With the right crop husbandry, roses thrive in the heart of the desert – here on a test field for biodynamic farming in Mehdi Abad. The fields in Mehdi Abad are trial fields belonging to the Iranian firm Zahra Rosewater Company which, with WALA’s support, is working them biodynamically. The founder of Zahra Rosewater, Homayoun Sanati, is dedicated not only to biodynamic farming, but to diverse social responsibility. Hundreds of farmers collaborate with the Zahra Rosewater Company, 50 percent of which belongs to the Sanati Foundation, an institution founded by Homayoun Sanati’s grandfather. "We must teach the children to think, not just the rote learning taught in state schools.“ Homayoun Sanati’s eyes are fiery when he speaks of his latest project. In 1974, after the death of his father, he took over the management of the local orphanage. Since taking on Ali Mostafavi, a professor of chemistry, as general manager of Zahra Rosewater in 2006 he devotes more time to the orphanages of the Sanati Foundation. A total of 200 children find shelter and protection in the Foundation’s institutions. For Homayoun Sanati children represent the future of Iran. "We must educate the mothers“, he adds in a determined voice. For it is they who equip the children with a knowledge of ethics and social conduct to accompany them on their path through life. The farmers who work for Zahra Rosewater are independent entrepreneurs. In contracts concluded with Zahra they undertake not to use chemical fertilisers now that Zahra has the fields certified as organic by the British Soil Association. "It is a challenge to stop the farmers treating the roses with chemical agents,” says Mostafavi, “because the Iranian government subsidises chemical fertilizers and initially these are the only ones the farmers are familiar with.” Education and training, for example by WALA’s agriculturist Hans Supenkämper, who works following biodynamic principles, are therefore important pillars of the collaboration with these farmers. Apart from this, Zahra provides the farmers not only with rose cuttings but also with free natural fertilisers from compost. Zahra gets most of its rose essential oil and rose water from the Lalehzar valley which lies in the centre of Iran at about 2200 metres above sea-level. At the entrance to the warehouse, where the air is pregnant with the scent of the roses spread on the ground, a distillery employee sits beside a large set of scales. He weighs every sackful of roses precisely, enters the weight in a receipt book and gives the farmer a receipt which he can take to be paid directly afterwards. Zahra has improved the water supply to the villages and supports the schools. A local health centre set up by Zahra guarantees primary health care. Anyone needing to visit a specialist in Kerman is helped with transport. The idea is working: Lalehzar has the lowest unemployment rate in the whole region. Each tube of Rose Day Cream contains the equivalent of over 30 roses – have you ever wondered where they all come from? Dr. Hauschka's parent company and manufacturer WALA Heilmittel GmbH nurtures sustainable partnerships around the world. Company founder Dr. Rudolf Hauschka's goal "to support the healing of humanity and the earth" informs not only the culture of Dr. Hauschka skin care and its manufacturer, WALA Heilmittel, but also the company's business practices, production methods and the very nature of the company's products themselves. For example, rose essential oil is sourced from Afghanistan, where we are working with the World Hunger Organization to offer approximately 700 farmers an alternative to opium cultivation. In order to combat the opium trade in the long term (80% percent of the world's heroin supply comes from Afghanistan) it is essential to offer the people an alternative means of securing a livelihood. In October 2004, on the initiative of German Agro Action, a project for producing rose oil was therefore started in which 700 farmers are now growing Damask roses on more than 100 hectares of land. With the production of rose oil an ancient Afghan tradition was brought back to life. Today, a large volume of rose oil is produced, most of which is sold to WALA. Life on our planet is full of rhythm. Dr. Hauschka Body Oils are vibrant and irresistibly rhythmic. Depending on the body oil, it can refresh and calm, instill feelings of warmth and comfort, soothe muscles, and enhance gentle caring touch through massage. All Dr. Hauschka Body Oils are compositions with a base of plant oil: sunflowers, jojoba, almonds and olives are organically grown and gently pressed to ensure that their valuable properties and vibrancy remain, and are absorbed easily by the skin. In addition to these base oils, the formula is further enriched with plant extracts. To mature a plant extraction, plant matter (such as blossoms and leaves, depending on the product) it is combined with the base oils and exposed to a temperature of 37°C, the same as our body temperature, for an entire week. The extract is stirred twice a day. It is through this rhythm of rest and movement that the plant's ingredients are unlocked and made accessible to us as human beings. Pure essential oils complete the formula and give the body oil the fragrance that defines its character: the oils unfold themselves; the grand Damask rose, the fresh lemon, and warm almond, to name three. You will recognise each of the six body oils by their fragrances, as well as learn to appreciate these scents as valuable elements of the formula. Which one is your favourite?
The rose embodies the duality of strength and delicateness, to soothe, nourish and protect the skin. Dr. Hauschka products feature the rose in many forms: rose water, rose wax (from rose petals), rose essential oil, rose extract, and rose hip extract. Extracts are prepared from fresh plants (grown sustainably and organically wherever possible) using Dr. Hauschka’s special rhythmic process which retains the essence of the plant.

What is biodynamic agriculture? This farming method, developed by Dr. Rudolf Steiner in 1924, regards the garden as a primarily closed system. In fact, biodynamic farming methods put more into the soil than what is taken out. Most of the seeds, compost and potting compost are self-produced on the farm itself. The gardeners use various plant preparations which help the compost to decompose and strengthen the resistance of the plants to pests and disease. Working by hand is essential when dealing with plants. When sowing and harvesting, our gardeners work with the rhythms of nature. The result is strong, healthy plants which are the foundation for all our natural skin care products.
The farmers of Eckwälden, Germany were skeptical when Dr. Hauschka Skin Care manufacturer WALA Heilmittel began searching for a plot of land in the area for the project in the 1950s. Nevertheless, directly behind the construction site for the new company building, chemist and company founder Rudolf Hauschka purchased a boggy meadow. Since that day, our gardeners have been cultivating the land using biodynamic methods, working it for many years, each building upon the last. Today, the gardeners grow more than 150 different plants for the manufacture of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care and other WALA preparations on an area of more than 11 acres.
Plant profile: Lemongrass Scientific name: Cymbopogon citratus Just thinking of lemongrass conjures up exotic images suffused with the fragrances of Asian cuisine. This perennial plant, which belongs to the grass family, is at home in tropical climates. It has smooth, bluish-green leaves consisting of a short, closed sheath at the base and a long, open blade which can grow to a length of up to 150 centimetres and droops gracefully at the tip. The sharp blades grow in clumps up to 120 centimetres across and when crushed give off a lemony aroma. In large doses the citral contained in the essential oil of lemongrass has calming, pain-relieving, antibacterial and fungicidal properties. As the familiar seasoning in Asian dishes or an ingredient of herbal teas it stimulates the appetite and alleviates gastrointestinal symptoms. Applied to the skin its lemony fragrance also repels insects. In Dr. Hauschka Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Bath Essence, Shower Cream, Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Oil, and Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Milk the essential oil of lemongrass can unfold its qualities. The body oil and the body milk contain an extract of lemon grass carefully prepared using our own special rhythmic process. For this, dried lemon grass from certified organic sources is allowed to fuse for a week with sunflower oil from organic sunflowers. During this phase the mixture is warmed to 37 °C – human body temperature. The mixture is stirred carefully mornings and evenings. In this way all the strength of the lemon grass is transferred to the oil.
